Routed Signs

Monday, September 20, 2010

Routed signs have long been a standard in the sign business. The painted wood sign that has the letters routed or carved into the wood and painted a different color has been found just about everywhere for as long as signs have been made.

The new twist that has made routed signs long-term and zero maintenance has been made possible by the company that brought low maintenance to the boat industry. In the past, boats used teak for all the trim because of its durability but to keep it looking good required a lot of manual work. directional sign - see thicknessEnter King Starboard. They introduced an Ultra High Density Polyethylene (UHDPE) that can be machined using equipment used to machine wood. The benefit is that all you need to do is wash it to keep it looking good on the boat. The material is UV stabilized and will not rot or dry out and will maintain its look for years.

So what does this have to do with routed signs and sign making? King Starboard developed a material called King ColorCore. This material is a UHDPE but is layered with a core of one color and the outside layers of a contrasting color. When the letters or other shapes are routed the outer layer is removed and the interior layer is exposed. routed golf tee signsThese signs are now very easy to read and will last for many years. These routed signs can be used for way finding and directional signs, or basic informational signs. It can also be used for lower cost tee signs, as shown in the picture, in place of expensive stone markers. So when using this material you may have to worry about changing out the post long before you have to change the sign.

Why a Foamcraft Monument sign?

Friday, September 17, 2010

Customers sometimes ask us why we recommend Foamcraft Monument Signs so frequently (and vehemently!). To get right to the point, here are the two main reasons:

Durability - Won't rot or rust because it is made from all synthetic construction. Others using Urethane or Dryvit do not compare to the durability. Hybrid Plastic Polymer Hard Coat is tougher than the standard coatings. Watch the hammer test video and see for yourself!

Versatile - Use the raised or recessed option for your signs and they are part of the monument so there is less chance for vandalism, no fasteners or glue to fail. These signs also allow for the installation of routed or other sign panels, LED message centers, Illuminated cabinets, solar or conventional lighting fixtures along with Hand Sculpted Stone and Accents. You can choose from over 50 standard models or have it custom manufactured.

In short, businesses, churches and other establishments need their exterior signage to be durable, and protected from both weather and vandals. We have found Foamcraft to be the best product on the market for overall durability in monument signage.
